Forever Immature

Behind the ingenious nickname “Luisifer” hides the Madrid-based illustrator, musician and VHS nerd Luis Picazo. A creative storm of it´s own that apparently does not want either to calm down or grow up. Hinsides got his fanzine Forever Immature some time ago, and for you who are interested in what this feat is all about; here is a newly baked review of it.

So, Mr Luis does not want to grow up now, does he? In this 32-page collection of black and whites, he expresses this with all the desired clarity needed. (There is an earlier issue of this zine made as well, which I have not read, but I can easily imagine that this sequel is a natural continuation of that first one.) After all, the concept is about not maturing so…It makes you wonder if this zine do live up to its name, doesn’t´ it?

And yes, after reading it through I actually do think that you can say so. Although the style that Luis uses in drawings, collages and lettering clearly shows that he is no longer a child or even a youth, his pictorial language are still permeated by the ”forever immature” attitude that is cultivated and successfully preserved in youth culture. The expression is street wise, punkish and reminiscent of what we sometimes call counter-culture.

In this case, however, there is no direct or distinct political ideology behind this attitude. Instead, we get surprisingly many spreads that are about eating and it seems like this activity occupies a large part of the author's interest.

In summary, this edition is both stylish and entertaining though. Seen as aphorisms, the images and texts collected here becomes something like a distorted reflection of our time. Filtered by a reluctance to be a part of it. An endeavor that is easy to sympathize despite it´s problems to grow up.
